Scandinavian Garden III - Windpower and Wishes *SOLD

This little 8" x 10" watercolor is the third in my Scandinavian Garden series. My intention was not to create a windmill farm but now that the piece is complete, all I really see is wind power and wishes. My alternate title is Windpower and Wishes but since it is a part of a series we will keep it in the Scandinavian Garden series.

Framed and matted this piece is $60 and available at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN.

Norwegian Garden [finished] - *SOLD

Norwegian Garden is finished! This was a fun one to paint with all its bold colors and interweaving shapes.  You can see an earlier [in progress] photo of Norwegian Garden in an earlier entry. You will see that I added some contrasting blues to really make the piece bold. This is not a subtle piece - it wants attention and that is why it was so much fun to paint.

Norwegian Garden is 18" x 36" painted in acrylic on stretched canvas. The design is continued onto the edges of the 1.5" thick stretch bars. Available at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN.

Scandinavian Garden DNA - original watercolor *SOLD

I have decided to create a Scandinavian Garden watercolor series. These colorful little pieces are so much fun they deserve a series. This one is titled Scandinavian Garden DNA. The bold blues contrast my last piece nicely. Here again, I am playing off the elongated geometric and organic shapes to create a whimsical piece.

I painted this watercolor on 140 lb Arches Rough surface watercolor paper. The painted area is 12"x4" with an overall area of 14"x5". Once I have enough of the Scandinavian garden pieces together I plan on looking into selling prints as well.

Scandinavian Garden - original watercolor by Jessie Townsdin *SOLD

In the same style as my Modern Scandinavian series comes this fun little watercolor painting. I used bright colors and elongated shapes associated with Scandinavian design to create a happy little piece. By using geometric shapes as well as some exaggerated organic elements I was going for a modern playful piece.

The overall size of this watercolor is 6" x 14" on a Arches 140 lb rough grain watercolor paper. Scandinavian Garden will soon be off to the framer and hanging at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN. Price to be determined based on frame.

Sunshine n Sailing - graphite and watercolor wash

Sunshine n Sailing is a graphite sketch on 140 lb watercolor paper. I used a light watercolor wash with sepia and paynes grey through the loosely sketched trees and water to give the piece a touch of nostalgia or a little bit of a vintage feel.

Years ago I painted this same scene as an acrylic painting. The inspiration comes from a photograph I took during the Leech Lake Regatta in 2002. The acrylic painting was titled Harbor Boy. You can see this piece on my archived painting website at: jessietownsdin.com.

Sunshine n Sailing is framed and matted to fit an 8" x 10" image area and overall frame dimension is 17"x21". This piece is available for sale at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN. 218-547-3729

Garden Grace - original watercolor *SOLD

Garden Grace is a 18" x 24" watercolor painting on 140 lb watercolor paper. With this piece I wanted the feel of a warm sunny afternoon which is why I left a lot of open space where the sun would be so warm that it washed out areas.

My mother is known to be singing in the garden as she works with her flowers and vegetables. On a sunny summer day you will  find her with her laundry basket full of fresh veggies and a content expression on her face. I imagine I am not the only one with a gardener Mom. This painting is a tribute to the graceful ladies who love to play in the dirt and admire the beauty that comes from a patch of dirt that has been well loved.

Strong and Steady - graphite drawing - *SOLD

This 9"x22" graphite drawing was the preliminary sketch which lead up to my acrylic painting titled: Birch among the White Pines. Strong and Steady is drawn on 140 lb watercolor paper. I used a combination of graphite pencils as well as Technalo pencils by Caran d Ache to give it a fluid and blended feel.

Unframed this pieces is $40 and available at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN. 218-547-3729

Birch Nestled among the White Pines *SOLD

Birch nestled among the White Pines is part of the birch tree series that I started last Fall. A customer, at Peculiar Painter, commented on my first piece saying that she would like one similar to it only smaller. She added that her favorite combination is a birch tree surrounded by pine branches and hinted that she might be interested in a painting that evoked the feel of this combination. While I made the birch trees the focus in this piece I did like the idea of the soft white pine color coming through in the background.

Using a combination of Perylene green and yellow ochre  I added short wispy strokes to eluded to the presence of white pine in the background. Think of a late summer morning, filled with light and warm breezes.

Birch nestled among the White Pines is 18" x 36" acrylic on stretched (1.5" thick)  canvas with painted edges.

Norwegian Garden (work in progress) by Jessie Townsdin

Norwegian Garden is my escape from the temperatures that have been well below zero for too long. I need color and happy energy. I need life blooming around me and happy faces smiling at me. I need sunshine and warmth and newness. So far this one makes me happy. It is almost finished and then I might paint another one to accompany it…unless the weather warms up and then you won't be able to keep me inside!

Norwegian Garden is part of my Modern Scandinavian series influenced by the bright colors and elongated forms seen in Scandinavian design. It is an 18" x 36" acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Soon to be hanging at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN.

Angelica Interpretation *SOLD

I was recently introduced to the book The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and am truly enjoying it. In it the characters discuss the forgotten language and meaning of flowers. This reminded me of an Angelica essential oil that a friend once gave me. He told about, "white angelica's ability to bring a delicate sense of strength and protection." In the book I see that the flower also means Inspiration. The combination of Angelica's meaning made me curious to find out more about this plant. I can see where Angelica gets it's titles because one look at it and I was inspired to paint it and keep it near me.

I painted this piece using only: Raw Umber, Indanthrene Blue, Paynes Gray and white

Angelica Interpretation is a small 6"x12" acrylic painting on cradled wood panel. It is available at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN.

Emotion's Edge *SOLD

Emotion's Edge, believe it or not, was inspired by slalom downhill ski turns. For those of you who downhill ski, and like to go fast, you know the rush that the speed and vertical will give you. You know the dance of a hard long carve or a fast snap from side to side. The combination of mixing these turns together with great music piped into your ears and the fresh mountain air surrounding you is enough to keep you going run after run even when your body is exhausted. You know that if you follow your tracks you will see the brief moment when that little roller launched you off the ground just long enough to make your heart sing. Emotion's Edge is about all of this.

Emotion's Edge is a 30" x 28" acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Available at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN. $225.00
