Painting milkweed pods is similar to painting bittersweet for me. It's twists and turns and graceful lines are enough to inspire many paintings and sketches. I keep a vessel of beautiful dried milkweed near my easel. The subtle markings and shadows always call me to create another painting.

I started this piece with the frame. The frame caught my attention at Heritage Framing and with it's odd interior size of 7.5 inches square - I decided watercolor would work best. The background was the color I applied first - to compliment the frame. 

Daniel Smith watercolor has a gorgeous mineral paint called Fuchsite Genuine which shines, especially when mixed with other colors. The earth tones of the milkweed were then painted to stand out from the light background. The final piece has a summery feel. I do like to start with the frame so I can lay the artwork in it's frame - along the way - to make sure it sings together.

Monarch Sanctuary *SOLD

Monarch Sanctuary was inspired by a field of beautiful milkweed pods dancing against a golden background of grasses and vines. Most of the seeds have flown but one pod remains with seeds ready to blow off into the field.

With the Monarch Butterfly disappearing - we are encouraged to protect milkweed. I would love to see more of these graceful pods springing up around us. Every stage of a milkweed stem is beautiful - from leaves to flowers to pods! Finding them with Monarch Caterpillar makes it even more magical!
