Bittersweet Season

 It's that time of year - Bittersweet harvesting! I found a nice healthy vine and it sparked a new bittersweet berry painting. This one is a little different from my past pieces for 2 reasons. #1 it is painted on a aquaboard panel. #2 - I worked with Heritage framing who created a fun shadow box style frame which gives it a more dimensional appearance.

It's that time of year! The official start of Autumn is this week and I was happy to harvest fresh Bittersweet to model for a new painting. Bittersweet is one of my absolute favorite subjects to paint. The fact that the berries mature right as the summer fades to autumn makes the name so appropriate.

Bittersweet is perhaps my favorite model. It twists and turns and has elegant spiral leaves. The berries are bold and sweet and any background will compliment the orange, yellow, red shells.

Sometimes I want to make bittersweet berries stand out from the background but, for this piece, I wanted the berries to blend in. Red just felt good on my eyes today. I used a combination of many reds, yellows and oranges make this canvas come alive with color.

Bittersweet Branches Intertwine

It's Bittersweet Season - and it's looking like a good one. Bright orange berries are dotting the forests and I'm on the lookout for inspiration. I love the freshly cut intertwining branches. The leaves don't last long - after it's cut - so I draw them as soon as I can.

Fresh Bittersweet I and II *SOLD

I painted Fresh Bittersweet I and II using the same color palette. The orange and reds play off of the teal to give the pieces a fresh feeling of renewal. The berries in Fresh Bittersweet I are larger than Fresh Bittersweet II where the berries are smaller - giving me more space to focus on the curling branch.

Each piece is 6" square - painted on stretched canvas with painted edges. They are framed in a simple natural floater frames with a black inset to give them a modern feel. With the painted edges and stretched canvas - they do not need to be framed. I list them as either framed or unframed. Framed - the outside measurement is 7.5" square.

When it rains for 5 days straight - I'm bound to brighten my palette to try and bring a little sunshine to my eyes. That is the case with Bittersweet - Daybreak. 

One of my favorite color combinations is Naples Yellow Deep with Pyrolle Red because it creates a warm sunset base - as it did with this little painting.

I strayed from my cobalt turquoise background and went for a cobalt grey background for this 8" square bittersweet painting. The bright orange berries seems to like their cool cobalt background. I also used a deep red for the underpainting here, instead of my usual phthalo blue outline.
