Campsite comforts is an acrylic ink painting on 187 lb. mixed media paper. The painted area measures 14" square. The final framed piece measures 20.5" square. Sweater Weather was inspired by the sweeping branch of an Elm tree that caught my attention while out walking this fall. The shape was a graceful motion which sent me back to get my camera to capture the painting inspiration.
I used a combination of layered brush strokes and color as well as palette knife for this piece. My palette was a combination of rich Golden acrylic and professional grade Winsor and Newton colors to really make the color vibrant and wet looking.

| The power went out at our house last night which changed our evening plans from kicking back and watching a movie to building a bonfire and enjoying the perfect calm evening as the sun went down. As we watched the fireflies appear and stars get brighter - I thought about what a blessing the beauty of the north woods is What does all this have to do with this painting.... the title of course. The actual painting is inspired by the reaching branches of a birch tree as it overlooks the lake. I used an overpainting technique to give the branches more movement and bring out the color in the water, sky and bark. This tiny little painting is very loose and impressionistic. I was dabbling with paint and figure sketching and decided the environment this person should be in is a light field court yard or cobblestone alleyway which opens onto a Farmer's Market. | As I prepared my 40"x40" canvas many ideas ran through my head of what I was in the mood to paint. I kept coming back to the idea of something light and whimsical with bright colors. I do love milkweed in all it's forms and have created a few paintings inspired by it. The ladder of large leaves and tiny blooms - creating a playful circle - make for a very whimsical subject. ..no wonder butterflies are drawn to it! | The Sugar Maple in one impressive tree. Just the gamut of color it produces is reason enough to love it - green, yellow, red, orange! On top of that it produces maple syrup! The straight trunk with it's expressive branches reaching out to dance is another reason to love this beauty. How could I not paint this lovely creature? | It's January which means things have gotten quiet at the gallery and I have 3 days a week to spend at home - PAINTING! Yes, I can paint at the shop but there is nothing like lighting candles, turning up the music and having the space all to myself to paint. I can work on larger pieces, watch the snow fall, make coffee and get lost in paint. My pup, Molly, seems to like this time too - she spent most of the afternoon curled up at my feet as I painted. Palette knife painting felt like the obvious choice for a summer sailboat scene. The application of paint with a knife helps to create unexpected transitions that dance like light on water. I used broad paint application for the sky and water and more detail on the sailboats in the distance. Winged Architect was inspired by a little bird's nest I noticed last year during the first rain of the springtime. I watched this nest as the year progressed - hoping to see what little bird created it. The lushness of the foliage grew around the nest so fast that I never got a clear view of the creature that might be making it home for another year.
The sweet little pod inspired a sweet little painting - made up of teal, ivory, grey and earth tone browns and reds. It is a calming piece - meant to relax it's viewer into thinking about nature and life cycles.

Running a store, in a small town, I get time to visit with customers and learn a little about their stories. Some inspire me with their outlook on life, positive take on situations and humor. One of these customers constantly reminds me why I have a little store in a small town.
We will call this customer E.S. She has a way of keeping a fresh energy and fresh but classic style. As Christmas was approaching - the year before last - she stopped into the shop, stylish as usual in every detail from jewelry to boots. I asked to take a couple photos for inspiration. Over a year later that day inspired a little ink painting titled: Saturday. This is my ode to all the wonderful customers who make running a little shop in a small town mean something to me.

This tiny little canvas packs a bold - naples yellow and teal punch. It is hard to see all the texture on this canvas - from the photo - but you will see it in person. I used a modeled plaster - applied with palette knife - before adding the color. Because of this - light will hit the surface different from every angle - giving it a unique effect.

Reach for the Sun is similar in style to several smaller pieces I have done this year but I added more layers and color to this piece. I started out with a much brighter - flat palette and kept adding richness until the piece calmed down and sat still - as if watching the sun go down behind the trees.
What surprised me is the dramatic difference in mood this piece has - depending on the light it is in. In a bright setting the yellows and greens come to life. In a darker setting the subtle reds in the background bring out the rich blues and teals. It will be fun to see where Reach for the Sun finds a home and what colors decide to dance for it's new owners.

| Until I was about 8 years old - my Grandparents owned and ran a little Motel called Northwood Beach in Walker, MN. I have happy memories here. I don't remember all the details but I do remember the view from their dining room of beautiful blue water - framed by 2 sweet birch trees. I believe the birch trees are gone now, and I know the skyline has more variation - but in the mind of an 8 year old - this is how I captured the view. Breeze is a new technique for me. I used a process of: gesso base, then applied a brushed artist acrylic ink (red earth color) and my final layer was an acrylic overpainting, using payne's grey and white paint. The surface is stretched canvas.
My inspiration was a photo that I took in 2007 on Rainy Lake. These sailors looked content and relaxed - just playing with the wind.

October Paddle was inspired by a beautiful evening, a man (my husband) and his fishing rod, a canoe with ties to Minnesota and the reflection that a steady stroke makes on a calm lake.
I have had this painting in mind for some time and finally had the right subject to paint. As with all my paintings, I started out with a sketch in paint - an underpainting. This portion came along fast as I was anxious to get this image down in paint. My husband says that he must inspire me - which he does. The layers happened over several weeks as I added many colors and details. I wanted the water to be just as much a part of the painting as the movement of the canoe.

| Recently I was asked to do another Blue Angelica painting, based on my 40" square Blue Angelica painting from 2014. This painting was to hang in an entryway to bless a cabin home. I knew that the Angelica scent was know for protective qualities but found out that blue and violet are also colors signifying protection. Combining all 3 would be a sure sign of protective and healing elements and and ideal subject to hang at the entrance to a home.
