| This piece has been on my mind to paint for over a year. The main subject was one I photographed as a macro detail. I can't quite remember what it was. I believe it was a blooming shrub that I enjoyed the shape of. I wanted to create a simple but striking piece with limited color to make the red stand out. Keeping with the clean lines of the painting - I asked my framer at Heritage framing - to pick a grey that would bring out the colors of the piece and pair with a maple style modern museum frame. This Kingfisher is a regular visitor near our home. His style makes me think of a well dressed young man with punk rock hair do. He must be a poet or musician. He sits and observes and is quick to fly if I get too close - so I observe from a distance and enjoy his company.
This little piece was fun to paint. With the holidays being so full, when I get the chance to sit down and work on a smaller piece it balances me out and lets my mind relax. I painted Kingfisher's Style with acrylic based ink on 140 lb. hot press paper. My attempt here is to give the piece a limited color woodblock feel although it is a painted piece.

Every September I head to Montana to visit my sister and her family. Josie's gardens are filled with wonderful bright flower faces with lots of personality. Her house is in town but when you enter her back yard you feel like you are in your own magical space surrounded by borders of beautiful vines, bushes and flowers. I found plenty of drawing inspiration while visiting.

This year, with spring arriving so late, the emergence of leaf buds was especially welcome. These Balsam Poplar buds had such an elegant shape - I was looking forward to painting them. Originally I sketched them as a horizontal piece but felt it worked as a vertical piece as well. I had hangers placed so it can hang either way.

I finally get to share the original artwork for my new table runners. I've been waiting to post the artwork until I had the table runners available. Today the table runners arrived! Since working with Ekelund weavers in Sweden - I have been creating original designs for Peculiar Painter art gallery. These are the 3rd and 4th custom designs for the store.
I knew I wanted to create a birch tree textile design but I wasn't sure about the colors. After having the Sweden weavers create textiles in 2 color schemes - I still couldn't decide. The solution - print them both!
We now have October Textile Blue and October Textile Grey available at Peculiar Painter. Textiles are 14"x47" and woven with organic cotton linen. Runners are $46.00 each

I was struck by the nouveau swirl one evening while sitting at the dinner table - admiring a bouquet of flowers. My lilies were a few days old and starting to get the exaggerated swirl ...the way lilies do. I pictured some of my favorite art nouveau pieces and was inspired to sketch a small section of the lilies. The watercolor paper I had on hand was an odd size. I do enjoy an odd sized piece.
After sketching this piece I imagined tiger lily coloring...even though the lilies which inspired the piece were stargazers. Using FW Inks - I mixed my warm grays, bright oranges and greens to complete the nouveau piece in an arts and crafts - woodblock sort of feel.

I started this piece at the end of 2017. I had a vision of a simple cerulean and navy blue wash - a calm piece with white space - very modern. This is a large watercolor 22.5" x 22.5" with a nice clean white boarder. As with most of my pieces - I set it where I could visit it everyday. I felt it wasn't complete although it was what I had envisioned. As we entered 2018 my mood changed. My energy and inspiration grew and I decided this piece needed more movement - more color - more depth. Orange, Paynes Grey and splatters of ink put the finishing touches on this piece.
I hope this piece represents the light and color I feel the new year brings. Path of Inspiration will be completed when I have it professionally framed. I'm still trying to decide what the perfect compliment frame will be. Final framed price and size to come. My husband has a framed photograph of the sun going down across a cozy looking lake. The dock and trees are a silhouette in the foreground. He says he took it at a cabin his family stayed at in Canada. This photo is calming - peaceful. I used his photo for inspiration to create this piece. I think many of us who have spent time "Up North" can imagine waking up and walking down to the dock with a blanket and cup of coffee to enjoy the calm and the view.
Because I painted the piece to feel like a sunset the colors are soft and deep without a lot of bright whites. Because of this - the painting, especially the blues, take on a different color in different light. As you can see in the above photos - sometimes the blues look teal while other times they are more of a marine blue.

This funny little cardinal is another model that caught my attention during a snowstorm. His bright red feathers were striking against the grey white background. I couldn't help but paint him looking a little ruffled by the big flakes surrounding him.

| While spending the holidays in Wisconsin at my In-Law's house I had the chance to see beautiful Blue Jays, Cardinals and sweet song birds up close. It's fun to see what birds are drawn to certain areas. These birds were lured in by the generous scoops of bird seed that were served up each day. River Grass has been a work in progress - until now. I originally sketched the piece in graphite. The subject of wild and ornamental grasses is one that I enjoy painting and sketching. Day-Dreamer is inspired by a former co-worker of mine. Every detail of her apparel was well thought out with graceful lines. She was stylish but not trendy - classic but current.
