I'm back to palette knife painting with this piece. I had a palette of colors in my mind before starting this piece. I wanted it to be about color and movement first and about the sailboats second. I feel like the sailboats took center stage after the red made an appearance ...and I'm okay with this. I hope you feel the inspiration a warm summer day on the water brings with this piece.

Summer Tempo *SOLD

Lakeside Delight *SOLD

It feels to me like summer hats are back. This makes me happy. Not only do they add a polished touch and protect from the sun but they are so much fun to paint. This little painting is inspired by short hair styles, hats, docks and lakes - some of the best things about Minnesota.

Lakeside Refresh *SOLD

This painting is inspired by a local resident who I often see walking - off in thought - with her headphones on. She is a wife and mother of 3, a working professional with many interests including sewing. I see her - often dressed in layers - carrying her hand sewn bag. She is tall and always neatly put together. I often find myself wondering what she thinks about on her walks. She always has a nautical feel about her. I picture her most at home by the water, wearing her stylish oversized glasses and hand made accessories. I have been wanting to paint her for years and finally - I came up with the right scene to place her in.

Summer Rain at the Lake *SOLD

As a shop owner, I enjoy watching the umbrellas come out as visitors come to town to escape the rain. On one of these rainy days, a lovely couple stopped in the shop. She was layered up with a tall caller, cool shoes, bun on top of her head, long coat and all of those little details that make for a fun painting subject.

This is the painting that resulted from that inspiring visit. It is a simple watercolor without a lot of layering. I used limited lines and light washes to give it a summery feel. Overcast with a Good Chance for Wine *SOLD

I'm not sure it it's the women's posture, the bottle of wine or the overcast setting that gives this painting such a relaxed ease but something about it just calms me. This little watercolor developed quickly after the initial sketch. My graphite lines can be seen under the light watercolor to give the piece a loose - open feeling.

Set Sail *SOLD

Set Sail is a palette knife painting - created to set a mood of calm - a piece you can look into to relax and unwind. It is loose and somewhat abstract but I'm hoping it's viewers feel water, sunshine, freedom and movement from it. Breakwater View *sold

Breakwater view is a 12" x 12" watercolor and graphite painting on 140 lb watercolor paper. The paintings of Winslow Homer have been inspiring me lately. His style of  loosely sketching a figure followed by a light wash of color are some of my favorite paintings. This is my take on the Winslow style. 

I used Caran d'ACHE graphite combined with M. Graham watercolors here.
