Christmas Morning NFS

I was inspired by my son for this little painting. After a beautiful snowfall he bundled up and headed for his sled. The morning felt peaceful and magical. I had to add birds and a snowman for some more fun. . . and of course the bunny that visits on occasion. A Christmas morning scene is not complete without a cozy cabin surrounded by flocked pines.

Seed Pod Dance •SOLD

I have been working on this piece - on and off - all spring-fall. I wanted it to feel simple and elegant but with a nice flow. Originally, I pictured it as a scroll style textile piece that would hang without a frame. The more I worked on it and observed it - the more I decided it needed a frame. 

After mounting the canvas, using an archival gel/adhesive to a board, I worked with local woodworker - Stanley Townsdin. Stanley is my brother and a talented woodworker. I knew he could create the perfect compliment to this piece. We decided on a 2" thick walnut frame with clean straight lines. I am happy with the finished piece!

I used a combination of burnt umber, unbleached titanium, warm grey, red iron oxide, paynes grey and a touch of yellow ochre for this piece. I wanted this painting to feel like nature - alive.

 I confess, I sketched this painting out early this Summer and just - this week- got around to finishing it. I had the scene in my head as summer colors but the inspiration that is surrounding us of brilliant fall colors got to me AND as the layers built...the painting turned to fall. I planted eucalyptus this summer and it added a whole new dimension to my little flower arrangements. The little curved sprigs have a whimsical quality that is so cheerful. This piece was inspired by one of these little bouquets.

 Kayaks come in all shapes and size around northern Minnesota. No matter what the color or shape - the face expression on the paddler always seems to be one of contentment. You can't see the expression of this paddler but I think you can feel her joy - being out on the water.

The Modern Scandinavian Bloom bug hit me when I spied wild roses blooming by the lake - early this summer. The star shape - left when the petals disappeared - called to me. The star petals are not the feature of this piece but I think it will bring you joy when you discover it surrounded by leaves.

Begonia Blooms •SOLD

This spring, as I picked my potted flowers to plant in the garden, I decided to plant this lovely Begonia in a large pot. It sits on my back porch and sings to me every morning, afternoon and evening. In the past, I have been drawn to paint wild flowers and weeds but this Begonia. . . this white, yellow and dancing light begonia kept calling to me to paint them. 

The subtle colors of the background are hard to capture in a photo. I used tints and shades of grey-green, sky blue and yellow to give it a hint of teal but very subtle. I hope you see this piece in person. It was a fun one to paint with it's bold contrast.

Balance *SOLD

 The Great Blue Heron appears out of nowhere when you least expect him. Nothing else moves like this graceful creatures. They have a mythical quality about them that fascinates me. 

I have been photographing the Heron that visits us regularly but never quite captured the pose I wanted to paint. One afternoon, when my husband was working from home, he captured a photo of the heron at the end of a dock - in the exact pose I wanted to paint!

The Wild Ones *SOLD

 It has been some time since I have worked on wood panel and I forgot how fun a smooth wood surface is to paint on. This piece was inspired by the grasses, wheat and wild "things" that add warmth to our scenery. I used only 5 colors on this piece in an attempt to add calm to the wild movement of the subject.

 As my nieces and nephews get older - and more reflective - they become subjects for more paintings. Most times they have no idea I have captured their images for my panting files. This moment was captured last summer as my oldest niece watched her cousins playing on the lake. I am enjoying observing these beautiful souls and seeing where their interests take them.

Blue Deep *SOLD

 When I started this canvas I was picturing water singing with deep blues under a blue sky. I was going for an emotional connection with thick layers dancing off of each other. The more the piece developed the more I felt it needed context. Sometimes I just can't leave an abstract as an abstract and this is one of those times. I feel like the piece is still about the water but the pair canoeing help give it a nice flow.

 Last summer, I had a hanging basket with a Bossa Nova Begonia in it. This gorgeous plant welcomed me everyday. The reds and lovely vines fascinated me. I just had to paint it. Campsite Comforts *SOLD (prints available)

 I have had the vision for this painting since 2017. Some friends came to visit years ago and they stayed at the Shores of Leech Lake - Campsite #1. It was a gorgeous and hot September evening when we visited their campsite. I was taking photos of the scenery when my husband wandered around look at the lake view. I pictured him holding a cup of coffee and relaxing. When I started to sketch out the scene I mentioned to my husband that it needed something more. He imagined a boy playing or fishing on the rocks and I said - of course! This is based on my family but I painted it in a way that - hopefully - lets you imagine your family - enjoying the lake and family time.

I confess - I used a long lens and photographed an unknowing tourist outside the shop for the inspiration for this painting. A family had parked outside the shop and I loved the relaxed style of this young woman. I had my camera ready for when they returned and to my delight she had a coffee in her hand this time too! Scarf + jacket + coffee and relaxed style = perfect painting subject.

The birch tree painting bug struck in October. It is now February and I'm just finishing this piece. I don't remember a painting ever being on my easel this long. Sidekick *SOLD

I can't take credit for the inspiration for this painting. A friend of mine approached me, about a year ago, to paint this scene - based on a photo she had taken of her daughter and dog. The photo had a beautiful stillness about it which I wasn't sure I could do justice.

It took 10 months for the vision to set in my mind and once it did the sketching process was smooth. It took several layers to get the depth I was looking for.  A new series is born and I'm excited to paint more - In the Garden - pieces. Watching gardeners work a patch of ground to raise food and flowers amazes me. The beauty of the environment and grace of a gardener is something I have always admired. My mother has had the green thumb as long as I can remember. Her happy place is her garden. I am going to attempt to capture her peaceful energy in one of these pieces. I want to make it just right so it might take me some time. the background in this piece is my Mother's garden with a wall of beans, sunflowers and tomatoes.
