October Light - Garden series #6 •SOLD

 I've had a vision for the next painting in the garden series. The perfect opportunity to take inspiration photos arrived on a beautiful October day. A local friend has a garden in the perfect setting. She also has dogs and chickens running around the property. I knew her earthy style, athletic form and beautiful yard would be the perfect setting for this painting. Thankfully she was willing to humor me and hold one of her chickens at the entrance to her garden. I imagine many hours have been spent here, working the dirt, growing goodness and nurturing the soul. I hope you connect with this feeling of October light and harvest time.

Aspen Amongst the Evergreens • SOLD

On one of my evening walks, this fall, I noticed the most graceful Aspen tree standing bright amongst a beautiful backdrop of deep greens. The contrast of light and complimentary colors imbedded onto my brain and I knew I had to paint this scene on a large canvas. 

I used a combination of palette knife and paint brush with this piece. I wanted it to feel loose but layered and refined.

 Sundown, on a calm evening, creates a light that feels like a song. I've had this song in my head and couldn't wait to get it down on canvas. This piece changes with the light around it. The blues and reds pop when well lit and then sit back when the light goes down - hopefully...a little like a sunset.

Market Day • SOLD

 When a visitor stopped by the shop, this summer, wearing a wonderful striped dress - I knew I had to paint her. I pictured her in a market scene. I couldn't decide between an art fair, farmers market or festival...so I combined some of my favorite things from all of these. We have textiles, tents, flowers and pottery displayed in this scene. Simplistic Geranium •SOLD

My mind has been filled with images that need to be put to paint lately...which means later nights :)  I'm always amazed how resilient and intense the Geranium plant is - it comes back and says, "hello, I've missed you!" I wanted to simplify this painting to be about the round petals and color.

Winter Coat •SOLD

I know it's only August but the mood to paint a winter scene hit. Grey, grey green, yellow ochre, iron oxide and burnt umber contrast the white in this piece to give it a subtle but rich feeling. I used palette knives for most of the painting while also using small brushes for small details. I'm not quite ready for snow but the idea of it does feel me with inspiration.

Kingfisher's Post

 My paintings slow down a bit during the summer months. This one has been on my easel, beckoning me to finish it, while the model - my Kingfisher inspiration calls from her post. I photographed the finished painting on the dock boards, where the Kingfisher sits. The Kingfisher watched, from a distance, as I took the photos of the painting. I heard her chattering away - I hope she liked her painting.

A Little Bit of Harmony II •SOLD

 I have had the inspiration for this painting for some time now. I photographed this fox a few winters ago. It sat patiently in the snow...it's eye on an unfortunate squirrel. I felt like he needed to be in a lush green environment with a bird on its head...just because his sly smile seemed to call for a bird on his head.

 The Tree Swallows, that reside near our house, have inspired another painting...and probably more to come. The movement they make and the way the light shimmers on and through their wings, make painting them entertaining.

Speed of Light •SOLD

It's possible that I spent hours and days sitting near the lake, panning my camera with Tree Swallows. They are fast acrobats with their aerial maneuvers. My original sketch of the piece had 3 birds in flight - eventually narrowing it down to one bird in flight with its near wing turned up. This piece is one that has to be seen in person to feel the movement.

Life Intertwined •SOLD

 The interdependence of flowers, birds and insects is fascinating. Observing a hummingbird pulling nectar from a flower feels me with awe. With this painting I was trying to show the same hummingbird in motion as it drinks from a phlox bloom.

Spring in Green and White •Auctioned

 This spring has been a good one for blooms and leaves and anything that grows well with water. I could probably spend a year just painting blooms. I confess, I haven't figured out exactly what type of blooms I have painted here. This is more about the feeling of spring-time and fresh starts.
