 I have been excited about working on this painting. I had the vision for it when the Columbine were blooming this spring. They modeled for me and I sketched my idea in paint. With summer and all the activity that comes with it I have spaced out my time - eager to keep working on it. Red is my favorite color and the intense reds of the Columbine spoke to me. I wanted to make the blooms extra large to keep with the over exaggerated feel of my other Modern Scandinavian pieces. I made the bird small to make the blooms feel even bigger.

A Touch of Orange •SOLD

 What are the chances that the day I finished this little painting - our summer Oriole appeared and started to sing it's cheerful song outside my window. PLUS - I was finishing up a hummingbird painting and a hummingbird arrived to ask for food. That and our friendly female cardinal just arrived. Who knew the arrival of these sweet songbirds would make my day so much more cheerful? Call me happy - the lake is open, grass is green and the summer birds are arriving!

Modern Scandinavian Eccentric Blooms •SOLD

 I went the opposite of my usual Modern Scandinavian garden series with this piece. I wanted the shapes to be dramatic and fun with little color to distract from the form. This piece is painted using only Paynes Grey and White with a little bit of sepia in the leaves.

Modern Scandinavian Osteospermum Blooms *SOLD (prints on metal available)

 The Osteospermum flower is one I  discovered in the Spring of 2019. I bought a Osteospermum - it was white with a purple center. It loved my raised garden bed. It grew and bloomed in a round amazing ball of green. I loved it so much that when this spring arrived I searched for the same variety. During my search I came across a modified style of this bloom. It’s shape was so exaggerated and fun with the teardrop bloom ends. I decided I probably wouldn’t find this variety in norther Minnesota BUT 2 days after discovering it existed....I found it at our local greenhouse. I was giddy and bought orange, white and purple varieties. These blooms made me happy all summer.

This is the first of many Osteospermum paintings  I’m sure. It easily fits into my Modern Scandinavian Garden series with it’s already stylized shape. Modern Scandinavian Dahlia Garden *SOLD

It's the season to add to my Modern Scandinavian series. When things calm down and I get to  reflect on the year - more colorful and whimsical creations come about. The top photo is from my Mom's garden early in the fall. Her Dahlias are amazing with their wild movement and intricate pieces - so much life, color and personality!

Modern Scandinavian Wild Rose *SOLD

I have been waiting for the time to paint these wild roses since the day I photographed them.  While out on a walk, last summer, the whimsical flower shells caught my attention. I would not have known what they were had I not seen a wild rose in full bloom near by. The center of the rose after the petals fall are a delight with their polka-dot spacing and yellow eye. Of course I had to exaggerate the form even more for this piece.

Modern Scandinavian Garden - Wild Weeds *SOLD

This Modern Scandinavian garden piece is another one inspired by my surrounding at my sister's house in Montana. She captured my hands drawing as I sat in her red chairs and admired all the fun things growing around her yard. We visited and enjoyed a cocktail as I sketched. It was a perfect evening.

I finished painting this piece when I returned home to Minnesota. Vibrant greens, warm yellows and hints of reds give this piece it's Scandinavian twist. Modern Scandinavian Garden - Globe Thistle *SOLD

A new Modern Scandinavian Garden painting is complete. This one took many weeks with all it's little details on a large canvas. I have painted Globe Thistle in the background of several Modern Scandinavian pieces. This time I decided the Globes should be the stars. I know thistle of this variety are more lavender in color - but I felt this piece called for more blues and hints of lavender throughout.

As with my other large garden series, a bird made an appearance. This little Hummingbird is so tiny he might be missed - look closely. Sizes are exaggerated and colors magnified to give this piece a bold whimsical presence.

Scandinavian Garden - Origami Iris *SOLD

Now THIS was a fun painting. This narrow lil watercolor was inspired by Grey and Lavender Iris flowers with bright yellow and orange stripe detail. I plan on painting, the inspiring flowers, in a more realistic acrylic painting but thought it would be fun to create a modern geometric piece out of watercolor. They turned into Origami looking flowers that are quiet happy.

Scandinavian Garden III - Windpower and Wishes *SOLD

This little 8" x 10" watercolor is the third in my Scandinavian Garden series. My intention was not to create a windmill farm but now that the piece is complete, all I really see is wind power and wishes. My alternate title is Windpower and Wishes but since it is a part of a series we will keep it in the Scandinavian Garden series.

Norwegian Garden [finished] - *SOLD

Norwegian Garden is finished! This was a fun one to paint with all its bold colors and interweaving shapes.  You can see an earlier [in progress] photo of Norwegian Garden in an earlier entry. You will see that I added some contrasting blues to really make the piece bold. This is not a subtle piece - it wants attention and that is why it was so much fun to paint.

Norwegian Garden is my escape from the temperatures that have been well below zero for too long. I need color and happy energy. I need life blooming around me and happy faces smiling at me. I need sunshine and warmth and newness. So far this one makes me happy. It is almost finished and then I might paint another one to accompany it…unless the weather warms up and then you won't be able to keep me inside!

Norwegian Garden is part of my Modern Scandinavian series influenced by the bright colors and elongated forms seen in Scandinavian design. It is an 18" x 36" acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Soon to be hanging at Peculiar Painter in Walker, MN.

Tulip in a Field of Dandelions *sold

Now this was fun to paint. In the spirit of my Modern Scandinavian series I painted this 8" x 24" acrylic painting with bright primary colors set off by sky blues and ivory. It is amazing how one little piece can change an entire room but somehow this little piece adds a playfulness to it's surroundings. 

I did a lot of overpainting with Tulip in a Field of Dandelions to give it a textile or embroidered feel. By continuing the geometric shapes around the edges it adds to the playfulness of the piece.
