Orchestra of Reeds *SOLD

Orchestra of Reeds is similar to a piece I painted 2 years ago titled Shoreline Rhapsody. Something about the colors of the shoreline against the native grasses and their movement is so appealing to capture in paint. I couldn’t help adding a sweet little songbird that matched it’s environment. I believe this is a Sparrow of some sort.

December Delivery *SOLD

 I wanted you to think of the quiet and calm the snow brings with this painting. The inspiration came while out walking near a neighborhood resort. I imagined the joy the colorful array of mailboxes brought to summer visitors as they visited their favorite place on the lake. I wanted those visitors to think of their cabin at the lake filled with quiet and the magic of the holidays.

Modern Scandinavian Osteospermum Blooms *SOLD (prints on metal available)

 The Osteospermum flower is one I  discovered in the Spring of 2019. I bought a Osteospermum - it was white with a purple center. It loved my raised garden bed. It grew and bloomed in a round amazing ball of green. I loved it so much that when this spring arrived I searched for the same variety. During my search I came across a modified style of this bloom. It’s shape was so exaggerated and fun with the teardrop bloom ends. I decided I probably wouldn’t find this variety in norther Minnesota BUT 2 days after discovering it existed....I found it at our local greenhouse. I was giddy and bought orange, white and purple varieties. These blooms made me happy all summer.

This is the first of many Osteospermum paintings  I’m sure. It easily fits into my Modern Scandinavian Garden series with it’s already stylized shape. Bull Rush & Wild Rice Passages *SOLD (prints available)

 While out fishing with my husband, late this summer, we came across a fisherman in a kayak. He knew his way around the wild rice and through the bull rush like he fished those waters often. As the sun started to set his neighbors, in their motor boats, would check on him and see how the fishing was. His presence amongst the reeds seemed as natural as a Heron fishing along the shoreline. As this fisherman paddled into the sunset I took a few photos. I was eager to get this scene in paint while it was fresh in my mind. I hope you can feel the natural flow of this peaceful human in nature.

I'm used to Hummingbirds being on the go - fluttering about. This summer we have been enjoying the calm of a little visitor who sits on a twig and observes at a calm and relaxing pace. I'm pretty sure he keeps an eye on us as we busy about.

Phlox blooms are surrounding my home. They were planted by my Grandmother to bring happy faces all over the yard and bring the hummingbirds out to say hi. I focused on one bloom for this tall piece. Work Before Play Makes for a Great Day •SOLD

This painting has been a fun one to work on. I would work on it outside - when I wanted to relax and imagine raking leaves in the fall with my sister. I imagined having a cup of coffee before layering up to work in the crisp air and thought about the refreshing feel of a morning of work before setting off to play. I tried to create a mood where you can imagine yourself in this scene - with your sister or good friend.

I wanted this piece to be about color, elegant blues and rich texture. My vision was for the kayakers to be visible but secondary - enjoying the elements - a small part of their big environment. It took many color combinations to achieve this vision.

Early Rise Yard Work •SOLD

I was trying to channel my Grandmother with this scene. I thought about her moving from Arizona to Minnesota in her late 20s. She went from being an independent newspaper woman to living in the quiet north woods with her new husband and his Norwegian family. I thought about how she would have gone from business attire to flannel, wool and work boots. I imagine she loved the view and took to the challenge like a trooper. She must have had thoughts of home dancing in her head as she worked at the resort and adjusted to Minnesota living. This is a piece about daydreams and hard work and being content at the end of the day.

Calming Waters *SOLD

I have had requests to paint kayakers over the years but I didn't have kayakers around me to find inspiration from. Then, this spring, my brother and his family invested in a fleet of kayaks - one per family member. They filled the bay with colorful boats and paddle rhythm. Alas - I have a lot of kayaking inspiration!

Songbird Setting *SOLD

Songbird Setting is a piece I painted with a textile translation in mind. I wanted the painting to be striking on it's own but be uniform enough to translate well into a woven textile. The movement of the grasses against the still songbird is meant to feel peaceful.

I converted the artwork into a vector illustration and sent the files to Sweden to be woven. I am pleased to say the woven table runners will be at Peculiar Painter late this spring.

Look Up •SOLD

As I spend more time at home I feel like I should be accomplishing more. I feel like I should contribute more. Anxiety keeps me from getting a good night of rest. What calms me is nature and fresh air. I put on my jacket and wander outside and balance is restored. I take a deep breath and tell myself to enjoy this time at home because schedules will be restored and Covid 19 will pass and I will miss my peace at home with no set schedule and more time to paint. So Look Up and enjoy nature and time and try not to think about the things we think are falling apart.  

Funny, when I reflect on the times in my past when I was at a crossroads, I have always gone for a walk and painted a tree. This tree is titled: Look Up. Essence of Summer *SOLD

I have a lot of respect for the sailors who can read the wind and guide their boat to where they want to go. I am NOT a sailor but have been on several very memorable sailboat adventures.  This is a skill I admire. This painting was inspired by a couple I could tell were well practice at reading the wind and sailing together. Imagine the early August sunshine and ease of sailors in their element dancing across the clear blue lake.

Here it is again - my weakness for the Woodpecker and their amazing patterns and fantastic swooping flight style. I confess - I have spent many hours observing their beauty and using the fastest shutter speed I can to try to freeze moments to inspire paintings.

Nature's Calm •SOLD

I'm not sure exactly what type of pod these are or if I collected them in Minnesota or Montana. I have a few collections of little lovely stems that I gather along walks. This could be dried lupine. Whatever it is - the warm tones and delicate shells provided inspiration for Nature's Calm.

This piece is one that should be seen in person. At 12"x48" it is hard to capture it in photos. I painted layer after layer to add depth and movement behind the calm stems.
