Lilies After the Rain *SOLD

 I was lucky enough to get to buy my Grandparents house. They planted wonderful perennials including yellow and orange lilies that dance along in untamed sections. After it rained these beauties had a fun art nouveau swirl to them. So, of course, I had to paint them.

Columbine Dancing with the Ferns •SOLD

 While out for a walk, this Spring, the sun hit a bundle of Columbine in the forest. The color sang and I ran for my camera. I didn't realize it at first but the ferns were dancing around the blooms, giving the flowers an even happier feel.

Blue Heron in Flight

I had to paint another Blue Heron painting! I actually started this one with Great Blue - my last Blue Heron Painting. This one has a completely different feel from my last piece. I used a palette knife to create most of this painting. I want you to hear the Blue Heron's wings on a silent bay as the sun sets. The thick layers of paint help give the painting a texture that plays colors off of each other.

 Two in a Yellow Canoe is a whimsical little painting with bright dancing summer colors. Our house sits between 2 resorts. We witness many canoes being paddled in the summer. This pair looked perfectly in tuned to each other and their surroundings.

 When the familiar humming-buzz of a Hummingbird's wings returns to northern Minnesota - they bring joy to our hearts and flowers. I have been getting buzzed a lot recently...maybe it's because I have been wearing bright colors or maybe they are saying hello. Either way - they make me happy.

If you have encountered a Great Blue Heron - you know they bring a sense of calm. They harmonize with their environment and move at their on pace. This Heron was taking a walk around our house, last year. I'm not sure why he was visiting so close but he gave me plenty of time to observe him and take photos...which inspired this painting.

Pileated on a Red Pine

 I started with the frame for creating this piece. When you start with a fun shape and rich tone of grey - you have to create something soothing with warm tones to complement it. I thought a Pileated Woodpecker with its pop of red - head - would go quite well and I happened to have some photo inspiration in my "inspiration" photos.

I'm back to palette knife painting with this piece. I had a palette of colors in my mind before starting this piece. I wanted it to be about color and movement first and about the sailboats second. I feel like the sailboats took center stage after the red made an appearance ...and I'm okay with this. I hope you feel the inspiration a warm summer day on the water brings with this piece.

Small Town Get-a-Way series

 This is #2 in the Small Town Get-a-Way series. I wanted to capture the feeling of visiting a small town with fresh eyes and inspiration.  This painting is a commissioned piece. I was asked to paint a Monarch butterfly in a Milkweed setting. I could instantly picture the painting and was excited to work on it.

I confess, this painting started out as a winter scene. It was a serene monotone piece and was nearly finished when the monotone days of winter made me really want color. . . and then....I added more color and more color until it was a warm early spring day and I could hear the birds and the moving water. 

This is a palette knife painting which I use a lot of paint on. Because of the change in direction my paint got even thicker. There is a lot of paint on this piece. I recommend seeing it in person. Some will like the thick paint but it might not appeal to everyone.

Push Pole Traditions •SOLD

 There is a push pole on display at Peculiar Painter. People often question what the long pole is used for. This pole is used to skillfully guide a canoe through the wild rice. It is beautiful to witness a canoe swiftly move through the rice as the wild rice is harvested every fall. This scene is one I enjoyed observing on Steamboat Bay, Leech Lake in the Fall of 2024.

Golf Lessons •NFS

 I have had this scene in my mind since the moment I witnessed it. My husband, son and I headed to the driving range on a spring day. My son wanted to carry his own clubs but we could tell that they were heavy for him. Matt, my husband, lightly held the handle of the clubs to ease the weight. I thought that this simple gesture is what being a father is about.

The View from Here I & II were commissioned pieces from a thoughtful husband to his wife. This painting started out with white, paynes grey and indigo. I then added little highlights of raw Sienna and red earth. You have to look close to see the subtle variation. I wanted this piece to feel like winter but cozy - not cold.

 Blue Jay's are constant visitors at our house. My son decided they are his favorite bird and I enjoy their constant presence. I wanted this regal Jay to have a fun and whimsical energy. Stripes, circles and bright colors give this painting a cheerful feel.

I remember being a child and finding so much joy in discovering Showy Lady-slippers. My Grandpa knew how much we loved these, I think he did too. He would scout out the best spots to see them and take us on lady-slipper drives. I paint them for this reason and because the swirl of the deep green leaves against the  delicate flower is really fun to paint.

The Calm •SOLD

There is a frame shop in Wisconsin called Avenue Art. Since the first time I entered their doors it has been a favorite stop every time my family is in Appleton. I stock up on beautiful frames and enjoy visualizing what to paint to fit the frame. This rich blue frame asked me to paint a tree surrounded by complimentary sunset tones. ..so I did!
