Modern Scandinavian Garden - Milkweed Blooms *SOLD

As I prepared my 40"x40" canvas many ideas ran through my head of what I was in the mood to paint. I kept coming back to the idea of something light and whimsical with bright colors. I do love milkweed in all it's forms and have created a few paintings inspired by it. The ladder of large leaves and tiny blooms - creating a playful circle - make for a very whimsical subject. ..no wonder butterflies are drawn to it!

If you are looking for a colorful piece to brighten up a space - this painting packs a punch of color. The colors do vary throughout the day - depending on it's light source. It ranges from a deep blue in the evening to a lively bright palette in the afternoon.

Expressive Sugar Maple *SOLD

The Sugar Maple in one impressive tree. Just the gamut of color it produces is reason enough to love it - green, yellow, red, orange!  On top of that it produces maple syrup! The straight trunk with it's expressive branches reaching out to dance is another reason to love this beauty. How could I not paint this lovely creature?

The deep thick bark contrasts the birch tree series I have been working on - requiring a new painting style. I used a combination of palette knife, side by side color mixing and laying to give this piece movement and the feeling of endless color.

Walker, Minnesota - view from city dock - NFS

Those of you who have spent time in Walker, Minnesota have probably enjoyed the view from city dock - with a cup of coffee in hand - thinking - I can see myself living here. Looking out at Walker Bay you are likely to see sailboats and fishing boats - some in a hurry and some just enjoying the sunshine. You are likely to see families walking on the dock - sometimes 4 generations together. There is a carefree energy that summer in Walker brings - a romance that a small town and lake setting - up north brings.

Rock-Side View *SOLD

Rock-Side View is a brushed ink painting. I started with a graphite sketch. Next - using a liner brush and FW ink, I painted over my sketch and then overpainted with the 2 tone grey ink. The final look is a clean block print style - simple and peaceful - like the setting of the girl watching the sailboats on the bay.

Indian Summer *SOLD

Sometimes the size of a canvas inspires the painting. With this 8"x24" canvas - I pictured a tall birch tree with it's limbs extending off of the canvas and wrapping around the edges. I contemplated making it a winter scene but the grey scene outside made me imaging color and warmth - a sunset over a calm lake.

The canvas is not large but the painting is rich in layers to give it a multi layer warmth. I wanted it to feel like the sun was just going down after a beautiful day on the lake - the kind that warms the skin makes you content to be exactly where you are.

Modern Scandinavian Garden - Woodpecker's Perch *SOLD

It's hard to pick a favorite bird in northern Minnesota since we have such a wonderful variety  of  tweeting, whistling, chirping, singing sweet birds. I do have a weakness for woodpecker birds from the downy woodpecker to the pileated woodpecker. Their fly-fly-swoop-fly motion looks like so much fun. I don't know how I'd feel about banging my head against a tree all day but the flying style I could defiantly get used to.

Using my Modern Scandinavian Garden style - I created this whimsical watercolor in honor of the sweet swooping woodpecker. Modern Scandinavian Garden - Woodpecker's Perch is 6"x16" before being framed. It is $99.00 unframed - I will post the final price after being framed in the next couple of days.
